KAMPALA, UGANDA - The premier U-17 grassroots youth football league, COPA Coca-Cola has kicked off its 2011 edition in the West Nile town of Arua in a tournament organizers have promised will increase value to all participants.
The tournament that has evolved to become an annual Secondary Schools' event in the country has undergone massive changes this year, as participants will represent regions instead of districts. 20 regions were created and 50 teams are taking part in the tournament. The regions include West Nile, Acholi, Karamoja, Buganda, among others.
Mr. Rafael Bwire, Chairman of the COPA organizing committee said that the new model will consolidate the gains the tournament has made in the last few years.
"The new structure brings much needed depth to the tournament and the knock-out structure that has often eliminated teams that would have otherwise performed very well now gives them a chance to bounce back after botched attempts", Bwire said.
Several scouts and tacticians are on hand to spot exceptionally talented players 11 of whom will be selected to attend an international soccer camp at a venue to be revealed at the end of the two week tournament. Last year's best performers had the attended the FIFA World Cup 2010 in South Africa where they participated as ball bearers in some matches.
Uganda's skipper Ibrahim Sekagya and David Obua  have also played in this tournament.
