Uganda gives Shs4b to tea investor

KAMPALA, UGANDA- Rwebitaba Zonal Agricultural Research and Development Institute in Kabarole District is to receive Ush4billion from the government to finance tea research.

 According to the Director of Research at the Institute Dr. Robert Kajobe the funds will support the construction of modern laboratories and increase the area coverage for tea research.

They will also recruit scientists to engage in tea research.

“Our mother Ministry  Agriculture approached the Finance Ministry to source for special funds to support research in the tea sector.

“The money was sourced and as an institute we are receiving about UGx4Billion to finance Infrastructure development at the Institute and do scientific research projects,” said Kajobe.

Rwebitaba Zonal Agricultural Research and Development Institute host the National Agricultural Research Organization in the Rwenzori Sub-region.

He said research in the tea sector is lagging behind compared to other crops yet it is on high demand at the international market.

Kajobe said with the coming of the funds, it will solve some of the scientific challenges the tea sector has been facing.

“Like in other crops where scientists  have developed new varieties raging from high yielding one , resistant to drought and diseases, tea also needs such varieties.

 

“As scientists,  we shall be developing  high yielding tea clone  and even those that are resistant to droughts and diseases at the end it will boost the sector,” he said
