MTN launches Internet Bus in Uganda

KAMPALA, Uganda - MTN Uganda has launched an internet bus in a move to deepen the use of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) in Uganda.

According to the company’s top management, the fully-kitted state of the art bus will be a vital tool for enhancing ICT education across the country.

The MTN Internet Bus comes at an estimated cost of Ush 600million (just over $230,000) is equipped with 16 computer work-stations as well as access to High Speed Internet Connectivity with Wi-Fi coverage.

Speaking at the unveiling of the bus in Kampala last week, Mazen Mroué the CEO MTN Uganda said the vehicle will help bridge the computer literacy gap that exists between the rural and urban folk.

“At MTN, innovation is about introducing something new, better or different, large or small that adds sustainable value to the lives of our customers. We believe the introduction of this Internet Bus will go a long way in creating the much needed ICT awareness across the country,” he said.

He said the MTN Internet Bus would provide ICT training capacity with the provision of basic computer skills and integrated e-Learning.

Mroué said this will further help support the government in efforts to enhance ICT skills and basic computer literacy in the country.

As at March 31, 2014, MTN Uganda’s total data subscribers had exceeded the 2.6 million mark.

Officiating at the launch, Eng. John Nasasira, Uganda’s Minister for ICT said that the drive is a welcome initiative and urged Ugandans to embrace the opportunity to better their lives.
