KAMPALA, UGANDA-The Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development is funding a five year youth empowerment initiative programme called the Job Stimulus Programme aimed at training youths to create employment.
The job stimulus programmee was initiated as a response to the success of the Uganda youth Convention in 2010.
"This programme aims at promoting self employment among the youth as an alternative to job seeking that follows academic qualifications," said Mr. Andrew Matovu, the coordinator Uganda Youth Convention while addressing journalists at the Uganda Media Centre.
He explained that the five year tailored programme will start in Bunyoro region and Hoima in particular  where 2000 youths will receive training on July 17  to 18.
It will then proceed to Gulu, Mbale, Jinja, Mbarara and Arua  and end in Kampala in this financial year.
Matovu said the objective is to coordinate activities geared towards creation of employment opportunities, provision of vocational and industrial training to 2000 youth monthly, improvement of business and savings skills and institution of  innovative approaches to sustain youth entrepreneurship ,build confidence and respect  for oneself, work and country among the youth. Implementing partners will include Enterprise Uganda, Uganda Industrial Research Institute that will educate the youth on how to add value to raw materials within their reach.

I work with a youth project in northern Uganda (Kitgum district). This government initiative to liberate youth from unemployment is most welcomed. However it should be made as widely known and accessible among youth as possible. Otherwise it will just pass without impact like numerous previous similar initiatives targeting youth that this gov't commisioned. Some corrupt elements i believe are now waiting for any opportunity to pounce on the programme. I urge those in the system who really feel for our youth to make the programme as corrupt proof as possible. Good luck
