The creation of the network comprising Standard chartered bank, MTN Uganda, Total and Shoprite was agreed upon during the United Against Malaria (UAM) strategy that was developed recently.
According to the Ministry of Health, malaria kills at least 100,000 people in Uganda each year, with children below five years accounting for about 80 per cent.
"With such statistics, the more partners we have on board to fight malaria, the easier and faster malaria will be kicked out of Uganda," said Kenneth Mulondo, Voices project coordinator.
"Our fighting against malaria can be nothing except when we are in a partnership," said Masiko David, Programme Officer for Malaria and HIV/AIDS at the Church of Uganda.
This partnership has so far distributed over 230,000 mosquito nets to over 18 districts in Uganda through the Church of Uganda structures and indirectly reached over 1million people on messages of malaria prevention. Ms Rukh-Shana Namuyimba, the MTN Uganda, corporate services coordinator, said; 'MTN will commit its services platforms in order to create a malaria free Uganda." The company also launched a one-month long SMS campaign through which it will send out awareness messages advising people on various control measures and treatment.
Shoprite through its wider on-site clientele will distribute educational materials on prevention and treatment throughout May to all its customers. Mr. Mamadou Ngom, the Total Uganda managing director, said the firm shall continue its initiative of visiting primary schools to sensitize young people against malaria.
Standard Chartered Bank, one of the longest partners in the malaria control initiative will continue to run it initiatives of distributing to the banks staff, customers and young school going children.
