KAMPALA, UGANDA - Many Ugandans will attest to the fact that a belly dancing show is not the best show for the party 'animals', this was different at the Asian Invasion.
The title of the concert sounded more like a movie title but then the atmosphere at Cayenne, a relatively new night spot in the affluent Kampala suburb of Bukoto was electric.
For starters it really was an Asian Invasion, judging from the number of Asians present the show.
It is not every day that we get the chance to see a belly dancer performing, more so one who is considered one of the best belly dancers in the world. It was no surprise therefore that Cayenne bar and lounge was by 9pm already full to capacity. Actually reservations had to be made early so as to be able to find seating space.
Indian Musicians Sodiy and Amar kicked off proceedings at 9:30pm with renditions of other people's songs that included Shakira's this time for Africa, Jai Ho, the soundtrack to the block buster Indian movie, 'Slumdog Millionaire', Celine Dione's 'My heart will go on', soundtrack to the movie 'Titanic' among others.
The two artists from India took requests from the audience for songs that they wanted them to perform. It was clear that these two were famous musicians back home and felt comfortable being among their own. To the Asian community that turned up, it was like watching a show by musical duo Moze Radio and Weasle or TMK Wanaume, or perharps Jua Cali.
It was obvious audience was enjoying every bit of the performance as they sang along to the songs, some were even given the opportunity to sing along with the artists on stage.
Oya Man, a belly dancer from Istanbul, Turkey seemed to be the main attraction as ululations from the audience bellowed out loudly when she was ushered onto the stage at around 10:30pm.
Her 15 minute performance was enough to get many people on their feet. She afterwards came back and took photos with her fans.
Cayenne bar was opened in March 2010 and also houses the 5enses saloon and spar in the same venue.
