BUJUMBURA, BURUNDI -Burundi's year-on-year inflation rate rose to 11.7 percent in September from 11.0 percent in August, partly due to high costs of housing, water and electricity, the country's statistics board said on Thursday.
The housing, water and electricity index increased to 8.0 percent in the year to September, up from 5.8 percent in August, said the Institute of Economic Studies and Statistics (ISTEEBU) in its monthly report.
"This rise in housing, water and electricity costs is explained by high water and electricity tariffs," said ISTEEBU official, Elie Ndiririkirirenza. In September, the central African nation's government raised electricity and water bills for consumers respectively by 124 percent and 266 percent.
