Tullow Oil invests £25,000 to build a local pool for the oil and gas sector

Kampala, Uganda -In an effort to build a broad talent pool for the country's oil and gas sector, Tullow Oil has invested over £25,000 (UGX95, 500,000) to promote education in Mathematics and sciences in Uganda.
The programme which at Makerere University Kampala, targets students between 14 and 16 years who study Mathematics and sciences in Uganda and other African countries. The 2012 Academy Programme that started last week in partnership with the African Gifted Foundation (AGF) aims at promoting a pool of local oil and gas expertise in Uganda. Ugandan students were joined by others from Botswana, Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa and Zanzibar.
Ms Cathy Adengo, Tullow Uganda's Communications Manager, said that Promotion of education is a key focus area under Tullow's Social Enterprise programme. "The support to the African Gifted Foundation promotes Tullow's objective to encourage further education opportunities for talented young children." Adengo explained.
With the emergence of an oil and gas sector in Uganda, the capacity development of young talent in areas of geosciences, engineering and other sciences is very important to Uganda's nascent oil sector.
"The training forms the foundation for the talent pool that will play a key role in contributing to the development of the oil and gas sector," she added.
The Founder and Chairman of AGF, Mr. Tom Ilube commended Tullow Oil for its recognition of talents among the country's brilliant young people.
"By supporting our programme, Tullow Oil is investing in ensuring that the future leadership and expertise needed to drive forward the Ugandan oil and gas industry will come from within." Ilube noted.
Tullow Oil's engineers are the back borne of the programmme mentoring students about mining oil and gas.
