KAMPALA, UGANDA - Over 10,000 people in Uganda's western district of Masindi have been connected to the national grid after power distributors Umeme, installed two transformers valued at $30,000.
The two transformers were energized the same day according to Umeme. The Bunyoro region has been facing frequent outages in recent weeks caused mainly by faults on the Mutundwe Substation but also largely due to vandalized transformers on the region.
Umeme is, however, dedicated to eliminating these outages completely and has been working round the clock to replace the faulty equipment that was damaged by fire in December 2011.
"Elimination of frequent outages in Bunyoro region is subject to completion of Mutundwe substation works. Equipment was ordered to permanently resolve this issue and expected delivery time is in a couple of weeks." said Florence Nsubuga, Umeme Outage Manager
She said the engineering team is working on improvising short-term solutions to this issue as Umeme awaits arrival of equipment from Germany.
Umeme last week took another transformer to Kitoba in Hoima District that was to restore power to approximately 6,000 people. It was to replace a transformer that was badly damaged at the end of December last year, causing a massive blackout in Hoima.
Umeme in recent months embarked on a customer communication plan where the electricity distributor has been able to keep their customers informed of major incidents affecting their electricity supply. The incident room that is manned 24 hours distributes information through radio and web based tools.
