The project that is part of EABL's target to provide clean water to at least 70,000 Ugandans by close of 2011 was unveiled recently at a give away of the tanks to the communities. The facilities in Wakiso will serve more than 30,000 people in Nsanji and Kasanje sub-counties 50 km south west of Kampala city.
"People have been sharing water with animals from the open wells on top of it being costly with a 20 litre jerrycan costing as high as Ushs 500 ($0.18)," Kituuka said. He added that EABL efforts will be complimented by government's establishment of water dams and boreholes in the region.
"Children will have more time to concentrate on their studies while parents save more money as the water from the tanks will cost as low as Ushs 50 ($0.018) per jerrycan," he explained.
The cost was established by water committees in the region basing on the affordability of the community with its major source of income being agriculture.
"The project comes in at a time when we most need it as our major source of income is income is small holder farming which yields less than what we spend," said Rita Namazzi a resident at Kasanje.
