Kampala, Uganda-With the current power shortage problems in the country, THEgenerators verify to be the alternative power source to many individuals.
 Industries and factories, schools, hospitals and homes among others need power to keep their work running. Many users are not aware of the harmful effects of exhaust fumes as some are delayed and long term.
In an interview with East African Business Week, Dr. Ahmed Mayanja of Mulago hospital says that generator exhaust emitted by the engines contain a large number of chemicals and gases as well as heavier particulate matter that can be inhaled through the lungs.
 "Generator fumes have carbon monoxide, a noxious gas which pollutes the air and mixes with water when it rains, making it acidic which if not boiled is harmful." Mayanja says. He adds that the instance is a delayed-action killer.
Dr. Allan Lubega of Monak medical center in Wandegeya (2 km north of Kampala city) adds that application of generators, in addition to emissions from cars and other machines increase the heat of the air around and ruins the ear drum.
 "Long exposure to any noise above 70 decibels is harmful to the ear and is likely to cause permanent loss of hearing," Lubega explained. "The hearing system can be injured not only by a loud blast or explosion but also by prolonged exposure to high noise levels."
Lubega adds that the harm varies on individuals as people already sick with diseases like asthma get into more serious health problems because the emissions clog the lungs.
"Also air pollution is now recognized as being especially harmful to children, the elderly and other sensitive people such as those affected with diabetes, cardiopulmonary diseases and other debilitating illnesses," Lubega added.
"People who are exposed to these emissions over a long period of time are more likely to have chronic respiratory symptoms, bronchitis, emphysema and reduced lung capacity," Samula added.
Samula explains that all individuals are affected though the elderly and children stand suffer the most.
"Diesel exhaust from generators can also contribute to inflammation of lung tissue, which inhibits breathing," explained Samula.
Much as the generators prove to be a suitable alternative to the current power blackouts in the country, concrete steps are required to effect the rehabilitation and expansion of the electricity infrastructure.
