This is intended to guarantee rational numbers of students admitted to specific courses with more emphasis placed on girls.
With the onset of the new academic year 2011/2012 in August, the university is set to change the rules governing admission especially for the private students.
The criterion is related to the one followed in admitting government sponsored students.
"As long as there are qualified applicants from either sex, not more than 60% of either girls or boys will be admitted to any programme under private sponsorship." Vice-chancellor Prof. Venansius Baryamureeba said.
"We may impose an admission ratio of 60:40 for government sponsorship in humanities (Arts) and 70:30 for science courses," said Ms Catherine Kanabahita, the Deputy Registrar and head of Gender Mainstreaming Division.
Kanabahita noted that move on government admissions is one of the recommendations made by Makerere's Gender Mainstreaming Directorate in a report to the university senate.
The report was written after the review of the 1.5 point scheme (for women) at the University which is given to girls to encourage girls' education.
Kanabahita who is also the acting director promised to ensure that the new procedure is implemented in admitting students in the next academic year. "If the proposals are adopted, Makerere will be the first public university in the country to implement such a policy."
