Kampala, Uganda-The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in partnership with Bayer Health Care has launched a contraceptive targeting the middle income women.
The contraceptive - Microgynon Fe is a family planning product that aims at improving the benefits of family planning with regards to the health of women. The initiative that was first launched in Ethiopia last year was unveiled in Kampala recently.
"The contraceptive allows couples to plan their families as they desire and improves the health of mothers and their children by allowing sufficient time between pregnancies," Dr Jorg Reinhardt the Chairman of Bayer Health care said.
USAID Deputy Mission Director Mr. John Mark Winfield explained that partnerships aimed at extending such services to the people help governments meet their Millennium Development goals.
"Reproductive health is key to achieving MDG's with the reduction of child mortality rates," Winfield explained.
Dr. Othman Kakaire a Gynecologist with Mulago Hospital said that Mycrogynon is a combination of contraceptives with the red caps preventing iron deficiencies especially when nutrition does not guarantee supplementary iron.
"Trials with more than 7,000 women and over 62,000 cycles were carried out on Mycrogynon for efficacy," Kakaire noted.
The efficacy of Mycrogynon depends on consistence and regular intake of he white caps for 21 days and later seven brown caps that restore iron. The pill is meant to cost Ushs 2,900 ($1.2) in all pharmacies and drug shops.
Microgynon is not exclusive from side effects like other pills as it causes nausea, spot bleeding, mild headaches, tender breasts, dizziness and weight gain or loss depending on the person.
