The Public Health Minister in Kenya Beth Mugo says a three year old boy tested positive for polo type virus in Rongo District of Nyanza Province recently.
Polio is a viral disease that can affect nerves and can lead to partial or full paralysis.  This viral infection is primarily spread from person to person through the fecal-oral route.
However, in places where sanitation is very good, transmission though throat secretions may be considered more important.
Polio is recognized in about 1 percent of infections by flaccid paralysis, while over 90 percent of infections are unapparent.

To prevent any further spread of the virus, a door to door anti polio vaccination campaign has been scheduled between the 24th and 28th of September. The campaign is targeting all children under five years in Migori, Homa-Bay, Kisii, Nyamira and Transmara.
Mugo says the campaign will include all children regardless of vaccination status. Additional campaign will occur in the following months.
The poliovirus types 1, 2 and 3 cause polio. All three types cause paralysis, with wild poliovirus type 1 being isolated from paralysis cases most often.
