 KIGALI, RWANDA - Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) in the United States will open a campus in Rwanda come next year to offer graduate studies across Africa.
CMU targets Rwandan and other African university graduates in technology. The University, which recently entered into an agreement with the Rwandan Government in Pittsburgh, US, will offer graduate degrees in information technology, computer and electrical engineering.
According to media reports, CMU will collaborate with the Rwandan government to develop an innovative incubator and a mobility centre in central African country.
The University officials said the Rwandan government would provide temporally space for the lectures while the African Development Bank (AfDB) is expected to fund construction of the University's campus in the technology savvy country.
The Rwandan government is expected to pay CMU US$100 million in 10 years, according to media reports quoting the university officials.
CMU will give priority to Rwandan graduates first although graduates from other African countries are eligible to apply. The university courses will follow the US campus standards and academic papers will carry equal weight.
