Rotary club awards cancer specialist

KAMPALA UGANDA - Last week the Uganda Rotary Club 9200 Awarded Dr. Victoria Walusansa for her commitment to serving cancer patients at the Uganda Institute of cancer in Mulago.
 Rotarians led by their president Patrick Kunobwa identified Dr. Walusansa as one who excelled in her vocation as an oncologist for her extraordinary relationship with patients.
  In her speech at Mulago Cancer Institute, Dr. Walusansa said her driving force is helping poor cancer patients while giving them hope. "Most patients once told of their status, despair and think only of death. They need to be comforted and encouraged."
On top of her award, she recieved Ushs.500, 000 ($192). Mrs. Lydia Bujara a breast Cancer survivor and president of the cervical and breast cancer campaign from the Lottery Club of Kampala declared a free cancer screening awareness campaign that will take place in Bombo barracks from 12th November to 10th/ December 2011 in Kitebi and Kasangati in Kmapala.
Dr. Jackson Orem the Director of Mulago Cancer institute requested government to support institutions in service delivery in order for the public to access these services. People go to Mulago Hospital because they believe government is the cardinal service provider and major assurance for the best services.
In Uganda, for every five hundred people, at least one has cancer the commonest being cervical , leukemia, breast cancer ,Non Hodgkin lymphoma (a diverse group of blood cancers), liver cancer , prostrate cancer, Kaposi's Sarcoma,(a tumor caused by Human herpes virus), Burkitt's lymphoma, (this characteristically involves the jaw or other facial bone, distal ileum, cecum, ovaries, kidney or the breast), this type of cancer occurs in the setting of post-transplant patients who are taking immune suppressive drugs.
