KAMPALA, UGANDA- Despite the anticipated arrival of tax free imported sugar this October, Sugar prices remain high.
According to Mr. Samuel Ssenkungu, the director trade, industry and cooperatives in Uganda's ministry of trade, the high global prices of goods and services coupled with the high prices of fuel and the high exchange rate due to a weakening Uganda Shilling may still force the sugar prices to be high.
"We don't expect the sugar prices to be as high as the Ush8000 ($3.2) but we don't either expect the prices to be below Ush2500 ($1)," said Ssenkungu.
He was speaking in Kampala during the best manufacturing practices, standards and certification training for micro and medium enterprises in the food and drink manufacturing industries workshop. Ssenkungu assured Ugandans that though there is an expected reduction in the sugar prices, the prices will not drastically fall from the $3.2 to below a dollar.
Uganda's minister for Trade, Industry and Cooperatives, Ms Amelia Kyambadde, indicated over 5000 tones of the tax free imported sugar is expected in the country this month although some imported sugar is already on sale.
"At the moment we expect that all the companies that were licensed to import the sugar, their consignment will arrive mid this month. Madhvani said they expect some 5000 tones to be arriving soon," noted Kyambadde.
Kyambadde also advised Ugandans who can, to avoid sugar and start using other options like honey.
The sugar crisis in Uganda has hit top levels, with the country president Mr. Yoweri Museveni banning politicians and speculators from involving in sugar trade.
The president also directed all manufacturers to publish wholesale traders' names, locations, the wholesale and retail price per kilogram of sugar in order for the government to crackdown unscrupulous sugar dealers and speculators who hike the prices.
