KAMPALA - After four weeks of darkness without any clear explanation, Members of Parliament (MPs) from the West Nile region now want West Nile Rural Electricity Company (WENRECO) to leave the region.
The MPs have also tasked Government to come up with an immediate solution to the continuous darkness that has hit the productive and strategically located region.
They turned their backs on WENRECO, a company contracted by government to generate and distribute power in the West Nile region, following its failure to supply power for over three weeks and irregularities in the billing system.
As a result, the region has been in darkness for the fourth week running after WENRECO switched off its generators due to some technical failures.
"We are going to hand over WENRECO today (last week) to you Minister of Energy and you go with it,´ said Bernard Atiku MP Ayivu
The legislators who were visiting the region with a delegation led by Minister for Energy , Irene Muloni, German Ambassdor to Uganda Klaus Dieter Duxmann, and EU Ambassador Roberto Ridolfi. During their visit of energy sector projects in West Nile region funded by Germany and the European Union (U), the MPs expressed concern on power issues in the region.
"If we had sustainable energy in this country, the issue of industrialization and adding value to our products would not be a problem" says Kasiano Wadri MP Terego and Chairman Public Accounts Committee.
"WENRECO is a disaster to this part of the country. They are gazetted fraudsters. They are not supplying power but at the end of the day they supply unbelievable bills" said Sam Wadri Nyakwa, Arua  district LC 5 Chairman.
 Lack of electricity has dealt a blow to various activities and health delivery systems in the region.
